Diagnosis and Troubleshooting of Common Drive Shaft Problems

The damage, wear, deformation and loss of dynamic balance of the drive shaft parts will cause abnormal noise and vibration during the driving of the car, and in severe cases, it will cause damage to related parts. When the car is driving, there is a "Gordon" sound when starting or accelerating rapidly, and it obviously shows the feeling of loose parts. If the transmission gear on the drive axle is not loose, it is obviously the drive shaft parts are loose. The loose parts are nothing more than the cross bearing of the universal joint or the steel bowl and the flange fork, the spline shaft and the spline sleeve of the expansion sleeve. Generally speaking, the shaft diameter of the cross shaft and the opening of the bearing should not exceed 0.13mm, and the meshing gap between the expansion spline shaft and the spline sleeve should not be greater than 0.3mm. Repair or replace it when it exceeds use.

If the chassis of a car is "buzzing" when driving, and the higher the driving speed, the louder the sound. This is generally due to the universal joint horizontal shaft and bearing wear and loose, the middle bearing of the drive shaft wear, the middle rubber bearing is damaged or the hanger is loose, or the hanger is fixed in the wrong position.

When a 6 × 4 car is under heavy load, especially when it occasionally makes a knocking sound during bumpy driving, attention should be paid to check whether the rear axle balance shaft is out of position and interferes with the drive shaft. If the noise is loud with the increase of vehicle speed and accompanied by shaking, this is generally due to the loss of balance of the drive shaft. This vibration is noticeable in the cab. The unbalance of the drive shaft should be less than 100g cm.

Severe drive shaft imbalance failure can cause damage to related components. Common is the crack of the clutch housing and the fatigue damage of the intermediate rubber bearing.

The installation of the intermediate hanger of the drive shaft is very important in maintenance. If the hanger is installed improperly, it will increase the running resistance and noise of the drive shaft, resulting in early damage to the bearing. When reinstalling the hanger, first do not tighten the hanger fixing bolts, use a jack to support the car drive wheel off the ground, put on the low gear, slowly rotate the drive shaft to automatically align the drive shaft with the hanger, and then tighten the hanger fixing bolts.
